Cannon Beach Family Photos Location: Better Than Haystack Rock

Planning Family or Couples Photos Near Cannon Beach? Here’s a Gorgeous Location Option!

When planning family photos down near Cannon Beach, everyone’s first instinct is to go to Haystack Rock. But I am here to tell you that there is another option that is way better!

Rather than dealing with all of the crowds at the popular section of Cannon beach (seriously, is that a relaxing experience?), how about the much more relaxed vibe of Ecola State Park? It has everything you could ever need!

Why I love Ecola State Park so much more than Haystack Rock

One of my favorite views on the Oregon coast is right by the main parking lot at Ecola State Park! There’s an amazing spot with Haystack Rock in the background.

A big bonus about this location is the large mountains to help partially block the sun so you don’t have such harsh light. This is especially great when the sun is still a little higher in the sky.

The beach area has plenty of logs to sit or climb on!

This location has lots of nooks and crannies to explore.

I especially love when the driftwood has been made into little huts!

The famous Goonies rock lives here. It’s the triangle-shaped one with a hole in the middle.

Another cool feature is the lighthouse on a rock off in the distance called Tillamook Rock Lighthouse (it’s in the top middle of the below photo)

And lastly, Ecola State Park has a beautiful section of beach that is typically pretty empty, so you don’t have to fight for that one perfect spot. Because when you go to Haystack Rock and the sun is out, there are basically two spots that everyone wants to be and you have to share them. That’s not my idea of a relaxing and chill family photography experience. I like the quieter vibe of Ecola State Park much better, plus it has a lot more variety in backdrops.

Have I convinced you to try out this new spot for your Cannon Beach family photos?

Ecola State Park is so much more chill than Haystack Rock, and it has much more variety. So when you’re deciding where to get your Cannon Beach family or couples photos, consider this location. And let your photographer (hopefully that’s me!) know this is where you’d like to go.
