What’s even better than having a fun family photo experience? Making it an adventure! I have been photographing families all over Northern Oregon, from the Columbia River Gorge to the Oregon Coast. Adventure family photos near Portland are typically everyone’s favorite sessions because of the backdrop and just the adventure element that they add to your photos.
Would your kids be more excited about a photo session at a local park or at a really cool location that they’ve never been to before with lots of scenic areas to discover, rocks to collect, and logs to climb on? I’m going to take a guess and say the answer is the second one.
But rather than driving to your photo session location, doing the session, and driving home… what if you made it a whole experience?
Day Trip Ideas for Your Adventure Family Photos near Portland
If you’re not going far from Portland, you can spend the day doing something fun with your family before you get your family photos taken. Having fun together doing something interesting will create new memories that you’ll always remember when you look at at the photos from that day.
Stop at different places along the drive, explore the nearest town, go out to eat at a nearby restaurant before the session so everyone has full bellies, sing songs in the car and make it a fun experience for everyone!
It doesn’t even need to be the entire day. If you’re afraid of tiring out the kids, just pack a picnic dinner and get to the location early. Have a fun family picnic together on a blanket and relax a bit. Don’t forget to bring face wipes and tooth brushes!
No matter what you decide to do first, make sure to bring your photo session clothing along in the car and get dressed after you eat! Let me know if you need me to come a few minutes early with my changing tent to make getting dressed easier.
Staying the Night after your Adventure Photo Session
Take it a step further and book an overnight stay somewhere close to your photo session location. Use this as an excuse to take a mini family vacation!
I love this option because then you don’t have to drive home afterwards in the dark. Also, if your kids don’t do amazing on long car rides, you can get to the hotel early and have some downtime before heading to your adventure session.
Check VRBO, Airbnb, or just google hotels in the area and select your dates in the search results. I’ve found great places to stay using all those methods.

My current favorite locations for adventure family photos near Portland are Cannon Beach, Pacific City, Cascade Locks, and Rowena Crest. But I’ve got a bucket list of places I’d like to go which include Smith Rock, Olympic National Park, Mt. Rainier, and Palouse Falls.
